The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) are committed to the environment. All new construction and major renovations to existing buildings are designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification guidelines. That means buildings are designed and constructed using strategies that address such standards as sustainable site selection, energy and water efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Green Building

Design and construction using green building guidelines is a priority on the Newark campus and at all COTC extended campuses. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, green building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction. A project that allows you to preserve most of the natural environment around a project site, while still allowing the building to serve its purpose is the ideal green building.​

Facilities Operations Building Sustainable Design Strategies

​Sustainable Sites

The site incorporates several elements designed to emphasize the relationship between the building and the surrounding ecosystem.  Features include numerous plant material native to the region, earthen mounds and trees that provide a natural screening of the facility from the adjacent residential neighborhood, and a bio-swale constructed to naturally filter water runoff prior to entering nearby public waterways.​

Saving Water

The Facilities Operations Building is equipped with water-saving restroom fixtures and showers reducing indoor water use by 20 percent.

Saving Energy

Energy efficient walls, windows, lighting and heating and cooling equipment was installed in the Facilities Operations Building, and that reduces energy use by an estimated 15 percent.

Throwing Less Away

Recycling is a priority during construction and after. More than 75 percent of the waste generated during construction was recycled and recycling continues now that the building is open.​
