Students Attend Propel Ohio Collegiate Leadership Summit

NEWARK, Ohio, December 8, 2017 — Seven students from The Ohio State University at Newark and one from Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) attended the Propel Ohio Collegiate Leadership Summit at The University of Akron on Friday, Nov. 17. The goal of the summit was to actively engage with college students on issues that affect childhood poverty, including health and hunger, education and education security.

Ohio State Newark student James Sullivan said, "I learned a great amount from Propel, but an issue that resonated with me was a breakout discussion on opioids. It revealed just how startling a problem opioid addiction has become."

Ohio State Newark student Josh Flickinger said, "I chose to attend because I think it is important to know what issues are affecting our communities. More young people need to be involved because the problems we face are ours."

COTC student Lilly Gassman noted, "I learned that you have to find the root of a problem and try to fix it at the root or nothing is going to change."

Propel Ohio is a leadership program launched in 2015 that promotes civic engagement and inspires undergraduate students to grow into civic leaders. It features a one-day statewide conference and five regional gatherings in winter and spring.
