Open to teachers of grades 7-12
NEWARK, Ohio, January 17, 2020 – There's still time for teachers of grades 7-12 to register for a free Materials Science Teacher Training workshop hosted by Central Ohio Technical College (COTC). All participants will receive a free materials science classroom kit offering hands-on lessons and labs to introduce middle and high school students to the basic classes of materials – ceramics, composites, metals and polymers. The teaching kit complies with Next Generation Science Standards. Continuing Education Credit is available for attendees, and lunch will be provided. The workshop will be held on Friday, February 7, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., in the John Gilbert Reese Center, Melissa Warner Bow Grand Ballroom at the COTC Newark campus. The Reese Center is located at 1209 University Drive, Newark. Space for this workshop is limited. RSVP at ceramics.org/teacherworkshop.
Attendees will also receive The Magic of Ceramics. This popular book introduces the nontechnical reader to the many applications of ceramics while teaching key scientific concepts.
Included in each kit:
• Most of the materials needed for nine demonstrations and lab activities for multiple uses.
• The teacher's manual, an illustrated guide that includes background information, learning objectives, keywords, materials, lists, safety precautions, detailed instructions, demo delivery hints, teacher discussion questions and student question handouts.
• A thumb drive that contains an introductory PowerPoint presentation, an electronic version of the teacher's manual and instructional videos for each demonstration and lab activity.
