NEWARK, Ohio, January 20, 2017– Registration is now open for the 5th annual High School Egg Drop Competition at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC). The event is being held on April 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the John Gilbert Reese Center, 1209 University Drive, Newark, OH 43055, on the shared campus of COTC and The Ohio State University at Newark. The competition is put on by COTC's engineering technology department.

2015EggDrop1_lr.jpgThe egg drop competition is a classic engineering experiment. The objective of the competition is to design a device that will protect an egg from breaking when it is dropped from a height of approximately 22 feet. Entrants compete to design the device with the lightest weight, the fewest number of parts and the most accurate fall to the drop zone target.

In 2016, more than 400 central Ohio high school students participated. The competition encourages ingenuity and innovation in high school students who have an interest in engineering, but it is also open to those students who plan on pursuing education outside of engineering after high school.

Registration is open to all high school students. Students can compete individually or as part of a team. Prizes and scholarships are awarded for the winning entries. The last day to register is April 14, 2017.
