New Sonography Options Available at Central Ohio Technical College

NEWARK, Ohio, Oct. 30, 2018 — In response to local employer demand, Central Ohio Technical College has added several training options in diagnostic medical sonography technology (DMS). Current COTC students and graduates of the program, as well as certified sonographers, may expand their skills by taking courses in abdominal, gynecological, breast, vascular, cardiac or musculoskeletal sonography.

"For the past few years, many of our general sonography graduates were employed by a facility that required them to also perform vascular sonography and become credentialed," said DMS Program Director and Assistant Professor Melinda Shoen, Ed. D., M.S.M, RDMS (AB, OB, BR), RVT, RDCS. "There is a growing trend in Central Ohio — and nationwide — that is requiring general sonographers to also be trained in vascular sonography."

Students may choose as little as one or decide to train in all six specialty modalities, which range in duration from one to three courses each. Much of the coursework is a combination of online learning and hands-on training in the scan lab on COTC's Newark campus. The amount of time required on campus depends on the modality. Current COTC students have the option to add courses in the special modality major for increased employability.

"Double majoring equips our students with the skills they need to perform examinations confidently and makes them an overall stronger candidate for employers," Shoen added. "The addition of the new special modalities major not only satisfies the demands of the job market, but it also improves patient care."

Interested sonographers must have at least one of the following credentials: RDMS, RVT, RDCS or RCS. New students must apply to COTC; the free application is available at COTC graduates do not need to apply, but they must reactivate their student account. All coursework is eligible for financial aid. High demand has resulted in a waitlist for spring semester, which starts Jan. 7, 2019; registration for summer semester, which starts May 13, 2019, will be available soon.
