Jarc, Roberts Recognized for Teaching Excellence

NEWARK, Ohio, May 6, 2019 James Jarc, Ed.D., built a career in advertising and creative services before discovering a passion for education. He began the 2018-19 academic year as a newly appointed assistant professor in the digital media design technology (DMD) program at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC); he ended his first year teaching as the recipient of the 2018-2019 COTC Full-Time Teaching Excellence Award.

"I am honored to receive the 2018-2019 Teaching Excellence Award. It means so much that the students would take the time to nominate me and share their experiences of my teaching," said Jarc. "I am so fortunate to work with such a creative, passionate and hard-working group of students. They inspire me each day to do my very best and they challenge me to keep growing as a leader, teacher and innovator."

Jarc has been employed at COTC for five years, serving as a part-time faculty member his first four years. Before he began his teaching career, Jarc co-founded and was managing partner of The Sheepdog Group, a full-service creative agency with locations in Columbus and Cleveland, from 2009-2016.

"I would like to thank the COTC administration and staff for their support and encouragement this year. As a new full-time faculty member, I asked a lot of questions! Additionally, my fellow faculty members have been very supportive, especially my mentor and DMD lead instructor, Leslie Najjar," said Jarc.

"Teaching can be a challenging profession at times, but it's also extremely rewarding," he continued. "This award has given me an opportunity to reflect on all of the amazing moments from this year, along with those that may not have been so pleasant, yet inspired personal growth."

The award was presented by graduate Faith Saxton at COTC's spring commencement ceremony on May 6, 2019. "This instructor has shown an interest in both his students' successes and their futures. I couldn't tell you how many times we'd file into the classroom and he would ask each of us how our days were, would listen fully and show a sincere interest," said Saxton. "We, as students, all believed he was worthy so much to the point that the student beside me wrote in all capital letters, 'I wish this instructor was my dad,' on the survey and hit send."

COTC also awards a Part-Time Teaching Excellence Award to part-time faculty. Connie Roberts, a biology instructor, is the 2018-2019 recipient.

"No one I have ever met has the passion for teaching she has," wrote a student. "She has a mission for every student to understand the material and will do whatever she needs to get through to each and every student so they understand. Everyone needs a cheerleader in their corner to believe in them and help them succeed in college, and she is that to so many students!"

The Teaching Excellence Award is presented annually to one full-time and one part-time faculty member in recognition of and to promote teaching excellence. Faculty members are nominated by students, staff, fellow faculty or alumni, with the winner selected by a faculty committee.
