NEWARK, Ohio, May 3, 2019 – A team from Crooksville High School took home the first place trophy in the 7th Annual Egg Drop competition at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC). Junior and senior members of the team won a $1,000 COTC scholarship and all teammates received a Sonosphere Bluetooth speaker and trophy. Another team from Crooksville took second place, and a team from Coshocton High School placed third. Second-place winners received a Switchback headphone speaker and a trophy; third place winners received a COTC swag bag and a trophy. More than 200 students from 24 different Ohio high schools competed.
The egg drop competition is a classic engineering experiment. The objective of the competition is to design a device that will protect an egg from breaking when it is dropped from a height of approximately 22 feet. Entrants compete to design the device with the lightest weight, the fewest number of parts and the most accurate fall to the drop zone target. The competition encourages ingenuity and innovation in high school students who have an interest in engineering, but it is also open to those students who plan on pursuing education outside of engineering after high school.
The competition was held Friday, April 26 in the John Gilbert Reese Center on the shared campus of COTC and The Ohio State University at Newark. The competition is put on each year by COTC's engineering technology department.
While on campus, entrants also explored STEM careers and education through hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations and STEM entertainment at the Destination for Innovation Extravaganza that included:
