Lin Xu is from Shanghai, China, but says she has
found a new home at Central Ohio Technical College along with the support she
needs to succeed. Xu was recently awarded a $500 scholarship from COTC
through the nonprofit organization Women Walking West.
“I am very appreciative of this scholarship,”
said Xu. “I am currently pursuing a degree in diagnostic medical sonography.”
Women Walking West was established in January 2015 to help foreign born women who legally
come to America achieve their educational goals. The founder of the
organization is Dr. George Sehi. Sehi came to the United States in 1975
from Iran to get an education. He had struggles himself, but believes
that women coming from Third World countries are at a greater disadvantage than
men when they come to the United States.
“I never forgot the challenges students’
face, especially foreign students, as they try to navigate through the system,”
said Sehi.
Xu already has a doctorate degree in
biomedical research. However, she decided to come to COTC to get her
associate degree because she realized that a career in biomedical research
would consume her entire life.
“I want to find a job that balances work and
life,” said Xu. “Central Ohio Technical College has a great reputation in
diagnostic medical sonography, and the tuition is reasonable. I also feel
like I have found a family here. It’s really great.”
