COTC Graduate Receives Officer of the Year Award

NEWARK, Ohio, July 14, 2017— A 2016 Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) Basic Police Academy (BPA) graduate was named Officer of the Year at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. Josh Pate works as a corporate security officer.

"It was an honor to receive the award," said Pate. "To me, the Officer of the Year Award means excellence and hard work." Pate was appointed lieutenant of his BPA class, which made him the leader of the 11-cadet class. He believes that responsibility helped him grow into the officer he has become.

"As lieutenant, it was my job to conduct uniform inspections, ensure that class paperwork was filled out, and set an example for the other cadets by performing as well as I could by having the best attitude that I could," said Pate. "I believe that these high expectations helped me perform at a higher level at work, which in turn helped me to win this award."

The BPA prepares students to meet the requirements of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission. Graduates are recommended to take the state certification examination to become a peace officer in Ohio. Graduates also earn 22.5 credits toward an Associate of Applied Science in Law Enforcement Technology.

"My favorite part of the program at COTC was the excellent instructors," said Pate. "I work with many former law enforcement officers and talk with police officers from several different agencies at work, and from what I can gather from all of their experiences, as well as the research I did before applying here, COTC has some of the best law enforcement training in the area. Not only are the instructors great at imparting their knowledge onto us, but they did a good job at making it fun at the same time."

COTC was ranked number one in Ohio and number 19 in the nation by PayScale in its 2016-17 College Salary Report ranking the best community and career colleges by salary potential. COTC is a fully accredited, public college dedicated to providing high-quality, accessible programs of technical education in response to current and emerging employment needs.
