Dig into an Heavy Equipment Operator career at COTC
PTS Heavy EquipmentThe program offers a combination of classroom and seat time (actual hands-on operation of all heavy equipment common to construction sites) that provides the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to obtain employment in multiple industries where heavy equipment operators are employed.

Successful completion of the Heavy Equipment Operation program results in a student receiving credentials from the NCCER as well as a Heavy Equipment Operation one-year certificate from COTC. Designed as the first year of a two-year associate degree, successful completers can continue at COTC to pursue the second year of the Heavy Equipment Operation Technology degree.

The COTC coursework includes soils and materials testing, more in-depth surveying, as well as, business, management, and communication curriculum that prepares graduates to advance in their careers to management and supervisory positions. Through PTS, students will receive:
  • Credentials from the NCCER in Heavy Equipment Operator Level One, Two and Three
  • 10-hour OSHA Construction Safety and Health Certificate
  • Safeland Basic Orientation credentials (ID card) for the oil and gas industry
  • CPR/First Aid credentials
This public/private partnership between the college and a private company addresses a growing workplace demand for credentialed heavy equipment operators and increasing technical training required in the field. Building maintenance and infrastructure replacement continue regardless of economic conditions. Job opportunities today are plentiful and as the economy recovers, are expected to increase at a rapid pace. The NCCER Core Curriculum is a prerequisite to all other craft curriculums. The NCCER modules cover topics such as Basic Safety, Communication Skills and Introduction to Construction Drawings. Completing this curriculum gives the trainee the basic skills needed to continue education in any craft area he or she chooses. The training a student in this partnership program receives focuses first on personal safety and safe operating practices as well as preventive maintenance of the equipment. The student will progress to then learn how to read grades and surveyor stakes project, how to cut sub-grade for roads and perform finish grading to project completion.

Hands-on training prepares program graduates for challenging careers in a variety of industries that require heavy equipment operators. Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
